From Failures to Fabulous: Michael Jordan Failures Commercial

I've been doing a "From Failures to Fabulous" series of articles about famous people who overcome obstacles and rejections to become very famous and well-respected in their fields.

As I was researching for my next article in the series, which will be arriving either this weekend or early next week, I stumbled across this video for Michael Jordan focusing on the negative side of his pretty amazing career. This is actually a Nike commercial.

Guess I need to add him in when I do an article on athletes!

Text from the video (in case you don't want to watch it or are unable to, but would still like to know what is said):

“I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I have been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
– Michael Jordan

After watching the video, I thought to myself, "How can this man have such a good reputation as an athlete with this bad of a track record?"

Well, turns out, after checking it out:

  • He may have missed more than 9,000 shots, but he has also made over 9,000 shots.
  • He's may have lost more than 300 games in 13 years, but that means he won more than 700 games.
  • He may have missed 26 game winning shots, but he made 25 game winning shots.
  • He is widely respected for his skills in the basketball court.
This is definitely inspirational to me.  What would have happened if Michael Jordan had stopped playing when he missed potentially game winning shots?  He would never have accomplished anything as impressive as he has in his career.

Well, I think the same applies for each of us in life.  If we don't continue trying after failures, then how can we ever hope to be truly successful.

For those of us who focus on negativity or impossibilities sometimes, let's try being failures like Michael Jordan.  That means if we fail, we get back up and try again!
