The #1 “Secret” Everyone with Fibromyalgia Needs to Know

The #1 “Secret” Everyone with Fibromyalgia Needs to Know

The one secret everyone with Fibromyalgia needs to know is really important. This is the key to managing Fibro instead of letting it take over your entire life rendering you in capable of performing the most basic of tasks.

What is the #1 Secret?

It’s so simple. Most people with Fibro automatically know the answer. When you have spent years coping with pain, fatigue, fog, and more, you learn the secret. If you have just been diagnosed, it’s time to know exactly what you need to know to manage your Fibromyalgia.

The #1 Secret or tip to managing Fibro is to understand, accept, and embrace the fact that what you do TODAY contains choices YOU make AND it will DETERMINE what your PAIN levels will be TOMORROW.

Does it seem overly simplistic? Well, it is and it isn’t.

You see, if we spend our day today bent over a computer or staying in bed while eating junk food without stretching, exercising, or following our treatment regimen, then tomorrow we will most likely be in worse shape.

On the other hand, if we follow our treatment regimen, which may consist of medication, supplements, physical therapy, massage, trigger point therapy, hydrotherapy, yoga, stretching, maintaining a positive attitude, meditating, or whatever you and your medical team decide works best for you, we will feel better OR if not better, then we will feel the same.

However, the more we do our regimen (which may take some time to figure out what is specifically going to work for you individually and may start small), the more we will IMPROVE!  The more we are able to do things, the better we will feel both mentally and physically.

Fibromyalgia illustrated quote

How it works for me
For me specifically, if I do my physical regimen of stretches, yoga, and trigger point therapy, and take plenty of Vitamin B, Magnesium, and other supplements, eat as healthy as possible (trying to cook foods that are unprocessed as much as possible) and maintain a positive, appreciative attitude, then the next day I am able to manage another day of actually living life.

Now, I’m not saying this tip will CURE you, because I don’t believe it will or at least it hasn’t cured me yet! BUT, when I started to focus on the things I could control, like exercise, food, supplements, therapy, and attitude, then I started to improve.

I personally have gone from a year ago barely being able to crawl to the bathroom at least 5 days out of 7, to being able to hold down a part-time job, blog part-time, raise my children, do fun things with my daughters, exercise daily, and maintain a household with chores and all (our house is messy sometimes though-I’m not a perfect housekeeper!).

What do you think of the tip? Are there other things we can control that I didn't think of that can help us prepare for a better tomorrow with Fibromaylgia?

  1. Emily, very wise words and they do not only apply to this condition but life in general. We have a choice and if life is to be better we need to get up and do something about it. Thanks for the words of wisdom.

  2. Thank you, I am so glad I read this. I have ME/chronic fatigue and have got better and better, but every now and then it sneaks up and gets me. Recently I have been getting over a virus and have been rather low physically, not able to exercise much and not eating as well as I know I should. Yesterday afternoon I had a really horrible brain fog. It reminded me what I used to feel like every day, and I wonder how I coped, especially when I was employed full time. Today I have looked after myself a bit better and your post has reminded me why that's so important. Thank you so much.

  3. You are so gentle in your approach, Emily - I just had to pop back in today from UBC to see what you were talking about in this blogpost! I have many friends with fibromyalgia and this will give me a new way to talk with them as well as a deepening understanding.

    THANK YOU!
